RARE Spanish edition of the monograph on The Alba Bible - a 1430 illuminated manuscript translation of the Old Testament made directly from Hebrew into Mediaeval Castilian, one of the earliest known translations into a Romance language. The translation was carried out under the direction of Moses Arragel, rabbi of the Jewish community of Maqueda in the Spanish province of Toledo, at the behest of Don Luis de Guzman, Grand Master of the military-religious Order of Calatrava, and illustrated with 334 elaborate miniatures by Franciscan artists of Toledo. 290x260mm. 381 pages. Red Hardcover with illustrated dust-jacket laid in illustrated slipcase. Black lettering on front cover and spine. Slipcase edges slightly rubbed, spine upper edge slightly worn. Spine edges slightly bumped. [SUMMARY]: This extremely rare richly illustrated book, of interest to any serious student of the history of Romance languages or Bible translations is in very good condition.
