SIGNED BY MARTIN BUBER with DEDICATION (in Hebrew) to his friends: Willy and Elsa Bodenheimer (Dr. Wilhelm (Judah) Bodenheimer and Dr. Esther Sarah (Elsa) Biram-Bodenheimer). RARE FIRST HEBREW EDITION of a religious chronicle in fictional form which reveals in great details and subtlety the inner world of Jewish messianic longing and expectation. Martin Buber (1878-1965) was an Austrian-born Israeli Jewish philosopher best known for his philosophy of dialogue, his scholarship, interpretation and translation of Hasidic lore, and translation of the Hebrew Bible into the German language. Buber was also a highly influential figure in many fields and posts he held, such as being the editor of the weekly `Die Welt`, the central organ of the Zionist movement (although he later withdrew from organizational work in Zionism), an honorary professor at the University of Frankfurt am Main (he resigned in protest from his professorship immediately after Adolf Hitler came to power in 1933 and founded the Central Office for Jewish Adult Education, which became an increasingly important body as the German government forbade Jews to attend public education), and, after settling in Jerusalem, Mandate Palestine (later Israel), professor at Hebrew University lecturing in anthropology and sociology. 165x110mm. 182 pages. Red cloth Hardcover. Cover and spine rubbed and stained. Rear cover lumpy. Cover edges and bottom corners, and spine upper edge rubbed and bumped. Spine somewhat peeling. Text block edges, inner cover and title page age-stained. Some pages upper or bottom edge water-stained - NO damage to text. Pages slightly yellowing. [SUMMARY]: This influential historical novel on Jewish themes, signed and dedicated by one of the foremost 20th-century philosophers of religion, is otherwise in good condition.
