RARE PHILIPPSON BIBLE - 2 VOLUMES (4 PARTS) BOUND TOGETHER AS PUBLISHED. In 1839, Ludwig Philippson, German-Jewish Rabbi, writer (1811-1889) and founder (in 1837) of the `Allgemeine Zeitung des Judenthums` which he edited until his death, began the annotated German translation of the Old Testament, completed in 1853. This translation, with a commentary in German, was issued in several editions, one being illustrated with designs by Gustave Doré. 515x330mm. 496+802 columns (two in each page), including the `Apokryphen nach dem griechischen Text übersetzt von D.Cassel`. Red illustrated Hardcover. Gilt embossed cover and spine. Page edges gilt. Cover corners and bottom edge worn. Spine front hinge detached from cover. Spine edges tattered. Pages yellowing and partly age-stained. 30 last pages (60 columns) of the second volume (3rd book of the Maccabees from end of zweiter Band) detached from binding (binding visible between pages). [SUMMARY]: This unique Philippson Bible with the celebrated illustrations by Gustav Dore is otherwise in good condition.
