FIRST EDITION of `The Holy State` (bound as usual with The Profane State) - an entertaining collection of sketches of eminent personalities important for the historian of English literature, with descriptions of the holy state as existing in the family and in public life, rules of conduct for the various professions and profane biographies; and SECOND EDITION of the first modern history of the crusades by the renowned English churchman and historian Thomas Fuller (1608-1661), also remembered for being one of the first English writers able to live by his pen (and his many patrons). Text block edges gilt. Cover and spine worn and wrinkled. Cover rubbed and slightly scratched. Front cover almost detached from binding. Cover edges and corners bumped and worn. Spine middle part peeling, rear hinge partly peeling. Two small holes on rear cover and spine. Ink and pencil writing on front inner cover. Front whitepage detached from binding. Two ink inscriptions on front whitepage. Front whitepage edges partly tattered. Frontispiece plate of the first title missing. Several worm-marks on first title introduction page edges (pp.I-XIV) - no damage to text. Frontispiece plate of the second title stained (mostly on edges/corners), small ink writing on edge (not touching the plate). Pages yellowing and wavy. [SUMMARY]: This extremely rare two books by a prolific 17th-century author are otherwise in good condition.
