RARE FIRST EUROPEAN EDITION of Schachnovelle (English The Royal Game, or Chess Story) by Stefan Zweig (1881-1942), an eminent Austrian Jewish novelist, playwright, journalist and biographer, who at the height of his literary career, in the 1920s and 1930s, he was one of the most popular writers in the world. In 1934, following Hitler`s rise to power in Germany, Zweig left Austria and eventually ended up in Petrópolis, a town in the conurbation of Rio de Janeiro. There he wrote some of his most famous works, including the `Schachnovelle`, first published in December 1942 in Buenos Aires in limited edition of 300 copies, and immediately after that in Europe through the famous Fischer publishing house owned Gottfried Bermann Fischer, who after 1936 relocated his publishing house first to Stockholm and afterwards to the United States. 180x115mm. 117 pages. Hardcover with cloth spine. Gilt front cover and spine. Cover and spine yellowing and slightly stained. Cover bottom corners rubbed. Spine gilt faded. Spine edges peeling. Dedication written in pen on front whitepage upper part. Small transparent stain on fore-edge of 3 front whitepages and page 11. Small pen mark on page 62 edge - no damage to text. [SUMMARY]: This extremely rare first European edition of one of the last works by Stefan Zweig before his suicide is in good condition.
