RARE short history of the progress of Sufi studies in Europe since the end of the 18th-century with suggestions for future work in the form of three lectures by Arthur John Arberry (1905-1969), an eminent British orientalist, whose translation of the Qur`an into English (`The Koran Interpreted`) is one of the most prominent written by a non-Muslim scholar, held in esteem both by academics and English-speaking Muslim clerics. Arberry was one of the leading scholars of Sufism as well, and is notable for introducing Rumi`s works to the west through his selective translations, and for his authoritative concise `Sufism: An Account of the Mystics of Islam`. His `Introduction to the History of Sufism` comprises three lectures: 1) Beginnings of Sufi Studies in Europe; 2) Second Phase: Goldziher to Massignon; 3) Present and Future of Sufi Studies. 185x125mm.
