RARE monograph on the formation of the most widely consulted legal code in Judaism the Shulchan Aruch, authored in Safed, Israel, by Yosef Karo in 1563 and published in Venice two years later. This book is an early work by Chaim Tschernowitz (pseudonym Rav Za`ir; 1871-1949), an eminent talmudic scholar and Hebrew author, who obtained semikha from Isaac Elchanan Spektor of Kovno in 1896 and moved the following year to Odessa where he founded his own yeshivah, eventually transforming it into a rabbinical seminary (1907) which attracted many students from the Jewish intelligentsia in Russia, including Hayyim Nahman Bialik and Joseph Klausner. Tchernowitz received a Ph.D. from the University of Würzburg in 1914 and settled in the United States in 1923, where he taught Talmud at the Jewish Institute of Religion in New York. 225x160mm. 79 pages.
