RARE French translation of selected chapters from `The Guide for the Perplexed` (Dalalat alha`irin/Moreh Nevukhim), one of the three major works of Rabbi Moshe ben Maimon, primarily known either as Maimonides, or by the acronym RAMBAM. Originally written in Judeo-Arabic, it was translated into French by an eminent German-born Jewish-French scholar Salomon Munk (1803-1867), who devoted himself to Judeo-Arabic literature of the Middle Ages and to the works of Maimonides, more especially the latter`s `The Guide for the Perplexed`,which he tranlsated from the Arabic original, supplementing the texts he found at the Bibliothèque Nationale de Paris from texts he had copied at Oxford. At the same time he made a thorough study of Aristotle, who is constantly quoted by Maimonides, and in this way gathered the necessary material for his edition of the Arabic text of the Moreh Nevukhim, with translation and annotations, which he published in three large volumes from 1856 to 1866, long after he had become blind (he had lost his eyesight in 1850 while in the course of cataloguing the Sanskrit and Hebrew manuscripts in the possession of the library). 165x115mm. 278 pages. Spine partly missing and cracked - binding coming loose and visible between some pages, but still holding. Pen inscription on front whitepage upper corner. Front whitepages and title page edges partly missing - NO damage to text. Some page edges tattered due to careless cutting of pages - NO damage to text. Pages browning, rough-cut and wavy. This extremely rare French translation of chapters from one of the most influential medieval philosophical-religious treatises has sustained some damage, but is still in reading condition for its age.
