RARE popular account of a 19th-century survey of Palestine by Claude Reignier Conder (1848-1910), a British soldier, explorer and antiquarian who carried out survey work in Palestine in 1872-1874, latterly in conjunction with Lt.Kitchener (later Lord Kitchener). This survey is acknowledged to have contributed more to the understanding of the archaeology and ancient history of Palestine than any other undertaking in the 19th-century. Both volumes contain wonderful b&w illustrations by an eminent English wood engraver, book illustrator and painter Josiah Wood Whymper (1813-1903). Green cloth embossed Hardcover with gilt illustrations on front cover, gilt emblem and lettering on spine. Cover rubbed and slightly scratched. Cover edges rubbed and slightly bumped. Cover corners bumped and peeling. Cover and spine slightly stained. Spine worn/wrinkled. Spine hinges partly cracked, glued and slightly peeling. Spine edges bumped and tattered. Glue stains on inner cover. Pages slightly yellowing. [VOL.I]: Rear inner cover glued. Edges of front whitepage, pre-title and title pages tattered. Pre-title and title pages detached from binding. Binding slightly visible between pages 48-49 and 256-257. Binding broken between pages 272 and 273. [VOL.II]: Inner cover glued. Whitepage edges worn. Binding slightly loose and visible between pages 50-51, 100-101 134-135, 222-223 and 240-241. [SUMMARY]: This extremely rare two volume memoir of 19th-century Ottoman Palestine by one of its first surveyors has sustained some damage (mainly to cover), but is otherwise in good reading condition.
