RARE monograph on Napoleon Bonaparte`s apprenticeship and advancement in the military career until the Battle of Lodi by Henry Spenser Wilkinson (1853-1937) - an eminent English historian and journalist known primarily for his work on military subjects. Wilkinson was the first Chichele Professor of Military History at Oxford University, and wrote many books on military and other subjects, among them `The French Army before Napoleon` (1915) and `The Defence of Piedmont, 1742-1748: A Prelude to the Study of Napoleon` (1927). Contains a b&w reproduction of Napoleon`s portrait as frontispiece (painted by Antoine-Jean Gros in 1797, from Louvre collection), 24 b&w maps and a large fold-out color map of Genoa (Genova).
