2 plates missing: `Lower pool of Gihon` and `Jew`s Place of Wailing`. A classic 19th century Palestine travel book with marvelous illustrations by William Henry Bartlett (1809-1854), a British artist best known for his numerous steel engravings, writer and illustrator of travel books. He is considered one of the foremost illustrators of topography of his generation and his engravings capturing views of Britain, the Balkans ,the Middle East, America and Canada have long since become classic. Numerous b&w illustrations and 2 fold-out maps. 260x170mm. 255 pages. Brown gilt Hardcover and spine. Cover slightly scratched, cover corners bumped and peeling, cover edges worn. Spine detached from front cover, spine edges worn, spine rear hinge partly cracked. Ex-libris and previous owner`s name written in pen on first whitepage. Small water stain on title-page inner edge (no damage to illustration). Pages slightly yellowing. Pages 114-118 detached from binding. All plates protected by layer of transparent foil. Some plates and foils detached from binding. Plate `Garden of Gethsemane` upper edge has small tear slightly touching plate upper part. Otherwise all plates and pages clean. [SUMMARY]: This beautifully illustrated classic travel book has unfortunately suffered some damage (mainly to cover) and loss of 2 plates, but is otherwise in good condition.
