תיאור הספר
This rare book is the only one-volume history devoted exclusively to the Portuguese Inquisition and its attempt, according to the author, to produce rather than to annihilate the caste of the "New Christians". This monograph is the only work available in English by António José Saraiva (1917-1993), professor emeritus of Portuguese literature at Lisbon University and foremost authority on Portuguese literature, history and culture. First published in 1969 and revised by the author several times until the fifth and last edition of 1985), this new English edition contains also a 1971 interview with professor Israel Salvator Révah, Saraiva`s dialogues and Revah`s reply of the same year; both scholars` letters to the Diário de Lisboa; expanded footnotes and introductions; revised index; a brief survey of the Portuguese Inquisition in Goa, India, a list of Portuguese kings and Inquisitors-general and an up-to-date bibliography. 245x160mm. 402 pages. Illustrated Hardcover. Cover corners and edges and spine edges slightly bumped. [SUMMARY]: This extremely rare history of the Portuguese Inquisition is otherwise in very good condition.
