This rare book is the only one-volume history devoted exclusively to the Portuguese Inquisition and its attempt, according to the author, to produce rather than to annihilate the caste of the "New Christians". This monograph is the only work available in English by António José Saraiva (1917-1993), professor emeritus of Portuguese literature at Lisbon University and foremost authority on Portuguese literature, history and culture.
