EXTREMELY RARE FIRST EDITION of the complete English translation of Mejelle - the Ottoman Civil Code, together with an introductory volume to the Code, with portions of the more important decisions rendered by the Courts of Palestine. The `Mejelle` (1869-1876) - the civil law of the Ottoman Empire in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, was the first (partial) codification of Islamic law undertaken without having recourse to secular borrowings. Binding loose and visible between inner cover and pages, and between several pages. Inner cover and title page stained. Pages 194-197 stained near binding - no damage to text. Few pages bottom corner slightly bumped/curved. Pages yellowing.
