THREE BOOKS BOUND TOGETHER. RARE FIRST EDITIONS of two treatises on Spinozism by Friedrich Heinrich Jacobi and review of these by Matthias Claudius. The first treatise, written in form of an exchange of letters with Lessing`s close friend Moses Mendelssohn, was begun in 1783 and published with commentary in 1785, while the second, published in 1786, is a reply to criticism of Jacobi`s "Ueber die Lehre des Spinoza in Briefen" published the previous year by Moses Mendelssohn and his circle, the supporters of philosophy of Spinoza and Kant against Jacobi`s attack. Appended is a review of both books written by Jacobi`s friend, the German poet Matthias Claudius, who tried to mediate between Jacobi and the philosophical associates of Lessing and Mendelssohn. 160x100mm. [215]+[VII+127]+[29] pages. Board Hardcover. Cover rubbed and worn. Cover corners bumped and peeling. Cover edges somewhat worn. Spine missing. Binding visible on title page verso and preface poem. Ink marks on title page verso, slightly visible also on next page and title page. Pen and pencil underlining on pages 194-215 of the first book; pages II-III, 76-79, 85, 100-109 of the second book; pages 3-5, 26 and 29 of the third book. 1 small hole penetrating through pages bottom corner near spine - no damage to text. Small worm-marks on pages 195-215 outer edge of the first book - no damage to text. 1 small hole on outer edge of pages 211-215 of the first book, and outer edge of pages I-28 (also frontispiece) of the second book - no damage to text or frontispiece. Pages yellowing and slightly age-stained, some pages slightly wavy. [SUMMARY]: Beside external damage to cover, these extremely rare first editions of treatises, outlining Jacobi`s laborious objection to a dogmatic system in philosophy, are in good overall condition.
