The book was written as an appendix to Shem Ha-Gedolim, a book written several decades earlier by Chaim Joseph David Azulai, a lexicon of famous rabbis and rabbinical texts of the Jewish diaspora. The first part of this book lists great rabbis active during the 19th century, after Azulai`s time, with their genealogies, ideals and virtues.
