Description
RARE Hungarian translation of `The Old New Land` (Altneuland), an utopian novel by the founder of political Zionism Theodor Herzl (1860-1904) published in 1902, and subsequently translated to many languages. `Altneuland`, Herzl`s last literary work which outlined his vision for a Jewish state in the Land of Israel, became one of Zionism`s establishing texts. This edition is particularly interesting due to the fact that Herzl was born in Pest (part of Budapest in the Kingdom of Hungary, now Hungary), to a Jewish family originally from Zimony (today Zemun, Serbia), and didn`t live to see his works being published in his homeland. Contains b&w plates. 205x145mm. 231 pages [+9]. Green Hardcover with gilt lettering on front cover and spine. Cover and spine slightly curved, rubbed and slightly stained. Cover bottom corners and front cover upper edge bumped. Cover corners and spine upper edge peeling. Spine bottom part missing. Spine rear hinge cracked and glued. Binding loose and visible between pages 2-3. Few pages bottom corner slightly peeled - no damage to text. Plate pages have tattered edges, one page upper corner/edge torn out. Text block edges and pages yellowing. [SUMMARY]: This extremely rare Hungarian translation of Herzl`s legendary novel has suffered some wear, but is still in good reading condition.
