Description
RARE monumental study of Hebrew printing in Basel, which from the end of 16th century became a center for Hebrew printing. The author - Joseph Preis (1889-1956) was an eminent bibliographer and historian, who also served as rabbi and teacher at Breslau (1918-21), rabbi and head of the talmudtorah at Munich, and in 1927 lecturer in Jewish subjects at Munich University. When the Nazis came to power in 1933, he went to live in Switzerland, where he devoted himself to research in Swiss university libraries and cataloged the Jewish holdings in several Swiss university libraries. His great achievement is the monumental work `Die basler hebraeischen Drucke` (1964), published posthumously by his son Bernard. Since Basle was a great center of learning in the 16th century, Prijs` book is an important contribution not only to the history of Jewish printing, but also to cultural history of the early Reformation. Prijs also published genealogical studies. Contains 171 b&w figures (many figures feature red ink). 315x240mm. LXIII+584 pages. Grey cloth Hardcover. Gilt lettering on red spine label. Cover slightly curved and slightly dirty. Cover corners and spine edges slightly bumped. Text block edges, inner cover and whitepages slightly age-stained. Text block edges slightly stained. [SUMMARY]: This extremely rare book, considered in the scholarly community as the most important bibliographical study of German Jewish printing both in terms of its significance and quality, is in very good condition.
