RARE FIRST EDITION what is considered to be the first Jewish Reform prayer book for Yom Kippur printed in the United States, with traditional Hebrew prayers, an English translation, and prayers in English and German. The editor, an eminent American Reform rabbi and author - Isaac Mayer Wise (1819-1900), was a pioneer of Reform Judaism in America and became its acknowledged leader and institutional architect, organizing the Union of American Hebrew Congregations in 1873, the Hebrew Union College in 1875, and the Central Conference of American Rabbis in 1889 (of which he served as president until his death. 170x125mm. 307+55 pages. Gilt cloth Hardcover and spine. Cover and spine worn and stained. Spine upper part missing, bottom edge tattered/peeling. Gilt partly faded/peeled. Several small wormholes on cover and inner cover. Two stickers on front inner cover. Whitepages slightly tattered. Single small wormhole on ten last pages edge near binding - NO damage to text. Pages 47-50 of the appendix (Psalms) tattered on edges. Binding slightly loose and visible between inner cover and whitepages, and between several last pages. Pen inscription on title page and page 55 of the appendix (last page). Pages yellowing. [SUMMARY]: This extremely rare pioneering Reform Jewish prayer book has sustained some damage, but is still in good reading condition.
