Description
FOUR PARTS BOUND IN THREE VOLUMES. COMPLETE SET of "Gan HaMeshalim veHaHidot" ("The Garden of Parables and Riddles") - a collection of poems by Todros ben Judah Halevi Abulafia (1247-after 1300), a Jewish poet who wrote primarily in Hebrew, but also poems in Arabic. The collection of poems (diwan) was written mostly in Hebrew and included also poems by other authors, as well as 35 poems that represented a poetic debate between Todros Abulafia and the poet Phinehas Halevi. Each volume contains two parts (the third volume contains four parts because it also contains a two-part appendix): first part contains the poems and the second part contains commentary and notes by the editor - David Yellin (1864-1941), Professor of Hebrew Poetry in the Spanish Period at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. [ALL VOLUMES]: 260x195mm. [XVIII+194+142] + [II+152+168/CVI+153-238+116+56+36] pages. Dark blue fake leather Hardcover with gilt spine. Cover corners rubbed. Spine edges bumped. Pages browning. [VOL.I]: Spine upper edge slightly tattered. Fore edge bottom part/bottom corner of introduction pages and first ten pages tattered - NO damage to text. First several introduction pages upper corner age-stained - NO damage to text. [VOL.II]: Front cover and spine front hinge middle part bumped. Rear cover bottom edge bumped. Some pages slightly water-stained/wavy - NO damage to text. [VOL.III]: Front cover bottom edge rubbed. Color pencil line on pre-title page. Some pages upper corner slightly bumped/wrinkled. [SUMMARY]: This extremely rare complete critical edition of poems by an eminent medieval Jewish poet, considered by some literary scholars as "probably the best and most prolific author of Christian Spain during the reigns of Alfonso the Learned and his son Sancho IV of Castile", is in good condition.
