RARE monograph on Napoleon Bonaparte`s apprenticeship and advancement in the military career until the Battle of Lodi by Henry Spenser Wilkinson (1853-1937) - an eminent English historian and journalist known primarily for his work on military subjects. Wilkinson was the first Chichele Professor of Military History at Oxford University, and wrote many books on military and other subjects, among them `The French Army before Napoleon` (1915) and `The Defence of Piedmont, 1742-1748: A Prelude to the Study of Napoleon` (1927). Contains a b&w reproduction of Napoleon`s portrait as frontispiece (painted by Antoine-Jean Gros in 1797, from Louvre collection), 24 b&w maps and a large fold-out color map of Genoa (Genova). Also contains 7 appendices. 230x150mm. XII+180 pages. Dark-blue cloth Hardcover with gilt spine. Cover rubbed. Cover corners rubbed and slightly bumped. Spine edges bumped/wrinkled. Spine hinges rubbed and slightly wrinkled. Faded and hardly visible inscription on spine. Previous owner`s name (Dr.Eichelberg) written in pencil on front whitepage upper edge. Faded and hardly visible stamp residues on front whitepage. Pages slightly yellowing and rough-cut as published. [SUMMARY]: This extremely rare monograph on early stages of Napoleon`s glorious military career, indispensable for Napoleonic scholarship, is otherwise in good condition.
