Description
RARE first report on the Jewish inscriptions of Hungary from Roman era, through the Middle Ages and up to the Turkish occupation. The 154 inscriptions are all given in translation and are richly documented with photographs, along with an extensive introduction on the internal and external history of each period, as well as notes which throw light upon the origin and distribution of names used by Jews. Due to the rather small body of material testimonies preserved from the history of Hungarian Jewry (most of them collected here) this collection will be of interest not only to scholars of Judaism, Oriental studies, history, archaeology, history of art and ethnography, but also to the interested layman. 245x170mm. Black cloth Hardcover with illustrated dust-jacket. Jacket slightly rubbed and yellowing. Jacket edges/corners slightly wrinkled. Rear cover bottom corner and spine edges bumped.
