RARE FIRST EDITION of an authoritative Ottoman-English dictionary by Sir James William Redhouse (1811-1892), who served as a draftsman, an interpreter to the Grand Vizier and the Minister for Foreign Affairs of the Turkish government, and a member of the Naval Council, receiving many awards from the government, such as the Sultan`s Imperial Order (İftar Nişanı) in 1841 and the Persian Order of the Lion and the Sun for his involvement in peace negotiations at Erzurum in 1847. Redhouse was commissioned by the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions for this dictionary, and his work was later used as the basis for many Turkish-English dictionaries. 245x175mm. 2062 pages. Green cloth rebound Hardcover with gilt spine. Cover rubbed. Spine yellowing and dirty. Spine bottom edge bumped. Pre-title page (publisher`s notice) wrinkled and taped with slight damage to text.
