Description
RARE retranslation of `The Book of Enoch` from the original Ethiopic into Hebrew with introduction and notes in German by Lazarus Goldschmidt (1871-1950), an eminent Lithuanian-born German Jewish writer and translator who was the first translator of the entire Babylonian Talmud (into German). Lazarus studied Oriental languages, including Ethiopic, at the Berlin University under the guidance of Professors Dillmann and Schrader. `The Book of Enoch` is wholly extant only in the Ge`ez language, thus the need for its retranslation back to Hebrew. This ancient Jewish religious text, ascribed by tradition to Enoch, the great-grandfather of Noah, is not part of the biblical canon as used by Jews, apart from Beta Israel; it is regarded as canonical by the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church and Eritrean Orthodox Tewahedo Church, but not by any other Christian groups. This book is bound together with another retranslation into Hebrew from the original Septuagint Greek of the 1st Book of Maccabees (title-page only in Hebrew), with Hebrew introduction to Macabees 1 and 2, by the eminent biblical scholar and historian Abraham Kahana (1874-1946). 235x160mm. [XXVI+92] + [26+80] pages. Quarter-cloth decorative crosshatch texture Hardcover. Cover rubbed. Cover edges and corners worn/peeling. Small stain on rear cover. Spine stained and yellowing. Spine edges rubbed. Pre-title page bottom corner missing and fore edge partly taped - NO damage to text. Both title-pages bottom corner wrinkled and tattered - NO damage to text. German title-page fore edge slightly torn/taped - NO damage to text. Page V fore edge partly taped - NO damage to text. Several first and few other pages age-stained. Some pages slightly age-stained. Pages yellowing. [SUMMARY]: This extremely rare book, of tremendous interest for biblical scholars and Semitists is otherwise in good condition.
