Description
VOLUME I, PART 1 ONLY - Corpus Inscriptionum Iudaeae/Palaestinae, Vol.1: Jerusalem, Part 1: 1-704. This first volume of the Corpus Inscriptionum Iudaeae/Palaestinae series covers the inscriptions of Jerusalem from the time of Alexander to the Arab conquest in all the languages used for inscriptions during those times: Hebrew, Aramaic, Greek, Latin, Syrian, and Armenian. The 1,120 texts have been divided in three sections according to their respective epochs: up to the destruction of Jerusalem in the year 70, to the beginning of the 4th century, and to the end of Byzantine rule in the 7th century. This volume contains 704 inscriptions up to 1st-century CE, arranged in four parts: A. Inscriptions of religious and public character (nos. 1-17); B. Funerary Inscriptions (main regions, nos. 18-608); C. Instrumentum domesticum (nos. 609-692); D. Varia (nos. 693-704). This copy is from the library of one of the editors, the world-renowned epigrapher and member of the Faculty of Humanities at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem Ada Yardeni (1937-2018). Yardeni had authored numerous publications, among them "The Book of Hebrew Script: History, Palaeography, Script Styles, Calligraphy & Design" (London: The British Library, 2002), which is considered the authoritative text on the subject. 245x175mm. XXVI+694 pages. Hardcover. Cover corners bumped and worn. Cover upper edge and spine edges bumped. Few pages upper corner wrinkled. Few small pencil notes on pages 414 and 628, and small correction-fluid marks and pen notes on pages 617 - both by Ada Yardeni (one of the volume`s editors).
