RARE illustrated edition of `Night-Thoughts` - a long poem in blank verse by an eminent English poet, critic, philosopher and theologian Edward Young (1683-1765). The Complaint: or, Night-Thoughts on Life, Death, & Immortality, better known simply as Night-Thoughts, was published in nine parts (or `nights`) between 1742 and 1745. The engravings were designed by Thomas Stothard (1755-1834) - an English painter, illustrator and engraver, a regular contributor to the Novelist`s Magazine and particularly known for his exquisite illustrations for `Robinson Crusoe`, `The Pilgrim`s Progress`, `Vicar of Wakefield`, `The Rape of the Lock`, William Cowper`s Poems, `Decameron`, Smollett`s `The Adventures of Peregrine Pickle`, Richardson`s `Clarissa` and `The History of Sir Charles Grandison`, and many others. This edition contains 8 engraved plates after Thomas Stothard (each printed on separate page), an additional plate in the middle of title-page, and the author`s portrait as frontispiece. 260x170mm. 364 pages. Dark-green/grey marbled leather gilt Hardcover bound with marbled endpapers. Text-block edges marbled. Cover rubbed, yellowing, slightly stained and slightly curved. Cover corners bumped. Cover corners/edges and spine edges/hinges heavily rubbed. Spine worn. Spine upper edge peeling. Spine bottom half missing. Spine rear hinge cracked and coming loose from rear cover. Previous owner`s name and date (20.12.1814) written in ink front whitepage upper corner/edge. Ink inscription on title-page upper corner - NO damage to text. Plates and few pages slightly age-stained. Pages slightly yellowing and slightly wavy. [SUMMARY]: This extremely rare and beautifully illustrated edition of a poem called by James Boswell "the grandest and richest poetry that human genius has ever produced" is in good condition for its age, with plates in good condition and ready for framing!
