Description
TWO ORIGINAL COLOR LITHOGRAPHS BY MARC CHAGALL were created especially for this comprehensive and profusely illustrated monograph on the renowned stained glass windows in the Synagogue of Hadassah Medical Center in Ein Kerem, Jerusalem, depicting the twelve tribes of Israel. Chagall envisaged the synagogue as "a crown offered to the Jewish Queen," and the windows as "jewels of translucent fire". At the dedication ceremony in 1962 Chagall said: "A stained glass window is a transparent partition between my heart and the heart of the world...To read the Bible is to perceive a certain light, and the window has to make this obvious through its simplicity and grace... The thoughts have nested in me for many years, since the time when my feet walked on the Holy Land, when I prepared myself to create engravings of the Bible. They strengthened me and encouraged me to bring my modest gift to the Jewish people, that people that lived here thousands of years ago". Contains 106 mostly color and few b&w full-page reproductions and b&w photographs. 33x26 cm. 210 pages. Grey cloth hardcover. Cover curved. Cover slightly age-stained. Pen inscriptions on inner cover, first, second and last white page, and page 3. All plates and text pages in very good condition. [SUMMARY]: This extremely rare album of a masterpiece by one of the greatest 20th-century artists, with two original color lithographs created especially for this monograph, is in good condition.
