RARE book about the so called Eastern question - a term referring to political and diplomatic problems in the Ottoman Empire after the Turkish defeat in the Russo-Turkish War (1768-1774), heralding the gradual decay of the huge Empire. Includes two maps of the region discussed in the book, 9 plates with caricatures and an appendix. One of the plates is a frontispiece. 205x135mm. [XI+252+VI+257+32] pages. Violet cloth embossed Hardcover. Gilt lettering on front cover and spine. Cover stained. Cover corners bumped. Spine faded. Spine upper edge partly missing. Spine edges bumped. Inner spine slightly loose. Front fold-out map coming loose from binding, hinges worn. Previous owner`s name written in pen on title page edge. Title page bottom corner missing - no damage to text. Binding slightly loose between several pages. Several pages slightly age stained. Pages slightly yellowing. [SUMMARY]: This extremely rare influential monograph on "The Eastern Question" is otherwise in good condition.
