Description
EXTREMELY RARE copy of the travel journal of Lady Judith Montefiore, the wife of the famous 19th-century Anglo-Jewish philanthropist Sir Moses Montefiore and an established philanthropist and public figure in her own right, known for her extensive charity and piety. The book details her second travel to Palestine in the years 1838-1839, where she and her husband visited the various Jewish communities living in Palestine, and studied the problems they faced. The book was printed in a small number of copies for private circulation, and is therefore quite a rarity. 205x140mm. 410 pages. Blue cloth Hardcover. Gilt Montefiore emblem on front. Gilt lettering on spine. Cover slightly worn. Cover corners slightly bumped and rubbed. Spine edges bumped and tattered. Sticker on spine bottom edge. Ex-libris sticker on front endpaper. Binding slightly visible on front inner cover and between pages 144-145, 160-161, 256-257. Pages rough-cut as published, some pages uncut. Pages slightly yellowing. [SUMMARY]: This rare journal, providing unique insights on the Jewish population of 19th-century Palestine, is otherwise in very good condition.
