RARE critical edition with French translation of `Kitab al-Luma` - the first complete Hebrew grammar ever produced, introducing the concept of lexical substitution in interpreting Classical Hebrew, which drew from the Arabic language research of Ibn Qutaybah. The author is Jonah ibn Janah or ibn Janach, also known as Abu al-Walid Marwan ibn Janah, (c.990-c.1055) - an eminent medieval Jewish physician and Hebrew grammarian born in Cordoba, later noving to Saragossa in 1012 due to the expulsion of the Jews. [BOTH VOLUMES]: 250x165mm. [LXIV+388] + [XVI+434] pages. Brown cloth Hardcover with gilt spine. Cover slightly dirty. Cover corners/edges and spine edges rubbed. Small worm-mark on rear endpaper (NOT penetrating into pages - NO damage to text. [VOL.I]: Introduction pages bottom corner slightly wrinkled. Inner cover and pages yellowing and age-stained. [VOL.II]: Several introduction pages upper corner wrinkled/worn. Pages browning. [SUMMARY]: These extremely rare two volumes of the critical edition of the original Judeo-Arabic text with notes and French translation of
