RARE monograph on Dionysian Mysteries in Roman Empire and its reflection in Longus`s bucolic romance "Daphis and Chloe" by the eminent German classical philologist Reinhold Merkelbach (1918-2006). Merkelbach is known for his numerous contributions to the study of ancient history, religions and literature (especially Hesiod, Homer, Plato, Greek, Greco-Roman mysteries and their relation to the literature of the period, and other Hellenistic and Roman religions, especially Greco-Egyptian cults, Manicheism and Mithraism), and ancient epigraphy and papyrology. He taught at the University of Erlangen and at the University of Cologne, received an honorary doctorate from Besançon University and since 1981 has been a full member of the Academy of Sciences and the Arts of North Rhine-Westphalia and a corresponding member of the British Academy, as well as a member and Vice-President of the International Committee of Papyrology.
