In this extremely rare illustrated historical study of Italian Renaissance art, especially the production of "cartoons" - refined full-scale drawings on paper that served to transfer a design onto the working surface, the eminent American art historian and curator Carmen Bambach analyzes and reconstructs the role of artists and their assistants in the creation of monumental painting, the complexity of workshop practices, and focuses on the techniques of pouncing (in Italian, "spolvero") and stylus tracing or incision ("calco", "calcare", "ricalcare," or "incisione indiretta"). 280x220mm.
