תיאור הספר
TWO VOLUMES IN ONE. RARE memoir by Charles Tristan, marquis de Montholon (1783-1853) - a French general during the Napoleonic Wars, who chose to go into exile on Saint Helena with the ex-Emperor after Napoleon`s second abdication (June 22, 1815) and stayed on at Longwood to the end of the former Emperor`s life (May 1821). On Saint Helena Napoleon chiefly dictated to Montholon the notes on his career which form a far from trustworthy commentary on the events of the first part of his life. Montholon had to spend many years in what is now Belgium, where he published these memoirs (before they were published in Paris in 1847). Those who believe that Napoleon was murdered by poisoning now regard Montholon as the most likely suspect, an accusation that has been forcefully argued by Ben Weider and Sten Forshufvud, and accepted by Alan Schom, Napoleon`s recent biographer. 155x105mm. 312+346 pages. Brown leather Hardcover with gilt spine and marbled endpaper. Cover rubbed. Cover corners and edges bumped and worn. Spine wrinkled and peeling. Spine front hinge cracked and glued. Ex-libris sticker on front endpaper. Few pages slightly age-stained. Some pages upper corner slightly wrinkled/bumped. Pages slightly yellowing. [SUMMARY]: This extremely rare Brussels edition of maybe the most important memoirs related to Napoleon, written by one of his general and possibly murderer, is otherwise in good condition.
