FIRST EDITION of an account of journey to the Holy Land by the renowned 19th-century French numismatist, Orientalist, and archaeologist Louis Felicien de Saulcy (1807–1880), who in 1863 conducted the first archaeological excavation of the Tombs of the Kings in East Jerusalem, believed to be the burial site of Queen Helene of Adiabene. [BOTH VOLUMES]: 170x250mm. 655+399 pages. Brown half-leather Hardcover with gilt lettering on ribbed spine and gilt framing on front and rear cover. Text block edges gilt. Endpapers marbled. Cover slightly stained. Cover edges slightly rubbed. Cover corners bumped and worn. Spine rubbed and stained. Spine edges peeling. Ex-libris stickers on front inner cover and library stamp on title page and several pages. Ink inscription on whitepage upper corner. Binding slightly visible on inner cover. Page edges rough-cut as published. Pages slightly yellowing and slightly age-stained. [VOL.I]: Spine hinges partly cracked. [VOL.II]: Spine front hinge bottom part cracked. [SUMMARY]: This extremely rare two volume account of a fascinating trip to the Holy Land by a renowned French numismatist, who the first to catalog the coins of Palestine, is in good condition.
