RARE TWO VOLUME SET of all 16 issues of "Die Freistatt",a Jewish-German periodical that appeared from April 1913 until July 1914. Founded by Fritz Mordechai Kaufmann (1888-1921), it was the only periodical to represent a `pan-Judaic` approach, distinguishing it both from liberal and Zionist Judaism in Germany at that time. Contains: Jahrg.1 - 1913/14, Nos.1-12; Jahrg.2 - 1914, Nos. 1-4 (uninterrupted run). Features works by many prominent writers, such as Elsa Lasker Schüler, Chaim Nachman Bialik, Dov Ber Borochov and numerous others. [BOTH VOLUMES]: 223x160mm. 736+256 pages (altogether 992 pages. Pagination - [VOL.I]: 544 / [VOL.II]: 545-736 & 256). Blue quarter-leather Hardcover with gilt lettering on spine. Red title pages. Cover slightly stained. Cover corners slightly worn. Spine edges slightly bumped. Ex-libris sticker on front inner cover. Inner cover age-stained. Page edges and text-block browning. Pages yellowing. [VOL.I]: Cover bottom corners bumped and worn. Rear cover scratched. Small red stains on last pages of April and of August issues - NO damage to text. Two unpaginated pages in 1913 Oktober issue loose (apparently they were added after the printing). [VOL.II]: Small red stain on page 609 upper corner. Some pages edge of the 1914 Februar issue slightly torn - NO damage to text. Title page of July issue and three last pages browning. Small tear on advertisement page edge - NO damage to text. [SUMMARY]: Both volumes comprising all issues of this influential and historically significant Jewish-German periodical, of interest to any serious student of German Jewry, are in good condition.
