תיאור הספר
EXTREMELY RARE FIRST EDITION! Includes two letters by Berr Isaac Berr de Turique (written in 1791 and 1806) and one of his speeches delivered before the council of the community of Nancy in 1791. Berr (1744-1828), a leader in the struggle for Jewish emancipation in France and one of the most influential figures in 18th-century French Jewry, he fought for the rights of the French Jews before the Assembly. Together with his son, Michel Berr, the first Jew in France to practice as an advocate, he wrote pamphlets arguing for the Jews and refuting anti-Jewish statements. The first letter included in the book is addressed to the senator of Paris, the second letter is addressed to the Jewish fellow citizens following the decree given on September 28 in 1791, when France became the first country of the world to emancipate its Jewish population. 220x140mm. 48 pages. Rebound marbled black quarter cloth hardcover with gilt lettering on spine and marbled endpapers. Cover corners and edges somewhat worn. Spine upper edge peeled. Spine hinge edges partly cracked. Spine bottom edge missing. Whitepages mildly browning. Front whitepages partly detached from binding. Several light pencil underlining on title page. Few pages slightly age-stained. Pages edges rough-cut as published. Pages mildly yellowing and wavy. [SUMMARY]: This significant historical document pertaining to Jewish emancipation is in good condition.
