How to Use the Advanced Search Page
The "Book Title" Field
Use this field to look for keywords in book titles and subtitles. This will most commonly also locate specific volume numbers, if applicable.
The "Authorname" Field
Use this field to look for specific authors.
The "Publication Details" Field
This is a very useful field - keywords entered here will be searched in a book's publication name, location, and year. An important field for anyone searching for specific editions, or books printed in specific cities.
The "Description" Field
Aside from the condition of the book, we often enter some important data in a book's description field. It includes the number of pages, the book's cover type (hard or soft), and may also include such data as number of volumes, edition, or other important keywords.
Search types: Loose, Normal, and Rigid
Our Advanced Search engine now allows for three degrees of search strictness. These are the Loose, Normal (default), and Rigid search types. They allow the user to generally set how many of his or her keywords must be present in a book's details for it to be found using the search.
Loose Search:
This type of search is the most forgiving, and almost guarantees to generate at least several results. Of course, it also often gives a large amount of results, and therefore is best used when other searchtypes fail.
A loose search looks for any book which contains at least one of the keywords you've entered.
Example:
In the above example we search for many different keywords in all the available fields. Any other searchtype will probably not produce any results, but when we use the loose search type, we get MANY results, probably several thousands. This is because the loose search seeks out books that contain ANY of these words! So the results list will contain all books titled
"Hamlet"
, all books titled
"Macbeth"
, all books written by
"Shakespeare"
or
"Kafka"
, all books printed in any of the three cities
"Paris"
,
"Berlin"
or
"London"
, any books which are of
"good"
or
"fair"
condition, and any books with a hard cover. Therefore, in a loose search, more keywords produce MORE results, hence it is the least specific type of search.
This is why Loose search is used when you're having trouble finding what you're looking for. It enables you to add more variations on your keywords, hoping that at least one of the variations will hit the mark and produce the books you're looking for. It's great when you are not absolutely sure about the correct title of a book, for instance.
Normal Search:
The "Normal Search" option is selected by default, and offers a middle-ground rigidity in your search. A Normal Search will locate books which contain at least one keyword from EACH field. It ignores empty fields of course.
Example:
A search for the word
"Bible"
in the book title field, and
"Berlin Paris"
in the publication details field, will produce a list of all Bibles (or books containing the word
"Bible"
in their titles) that were printed in Berlin or in Paris (or both). If a Rigid search (see below) was used, the only books returned would be those printed in Berlin
AND
Paris (and we have no such bibles in stock, at the moment). If a "loose search" was used, the result would've contained all our bibles and all other books printed in Paris or Berlin. As you can see, the Normal search mixes and matches your keywords, producing the most reasonable array of results.
Rigid Search:
The complete opposite of a "loose" search, the "Rigid" search type is also very straightforward, but has a very different effect.
In a rigid search, the website looks only for books which contain ALL keywords you're entered! It will only produce books which answer to each and every keyword. While it's hard to get a rigid search right, especially when using a lot of keywords, it is extremely powerful in locating very specific books, especially when using common keywords such as city names, years of publication, or prolific authors (which, using other search types, would produce too many results). A rigid search will usually produce very few results if any, but these will most likely be the results you were looking for, if you entered the correct keywords.
