Description
FOUR PARTS BOUND IN THREE VOLUMES. COMPLETE SET of "Gan HaMeshalim veHaHidot" ("The Garden of Parables and Riddles") - a collection of poems by Todros ben Judah Halevi Abulafia (1247-after 1300), a Jewish poet who wrote primarily in Hebrew, but also poems in Arabic. The collection of poems (diwan) was written mostly in Hebrew and included also poems by other authors, as well as 35 poems that represented a poetic debate between Todros Abulafia and the poet Phinehas Halevi. Each volume contains two parts (vol.3 contains four parts because it also contains a two-part appendix): first part contains the poems and the second part contains commentary and notes by the editor - David Yellin (1864-1941), Professor of Hebrew Poetry in the Spanish Period at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. [ALL VOLUMES]: 260x195mm. [XVIII+194+142] + [II+152+168/CVI+153-238+116+56+36] pages. [VOL.I]: Green cloth rebound Hardcover with beige leather ribbed spine. Gilt title label on spine. Cover and spine rubbed and somewhat stained. Cover edges bumped. Cover corners and spine slightly peeling. Gilt lettering faded. Faint inscription on spine bottom edge. Text block fore edge slightly stained. Pages slightly yellowing. [VOLS.II&III]: Dark green cloth Hardcover. Gilt front cover and spine. Pages browning. [VOL.II]: Cover slightly stained. Cover corners rubbed. Spine edges bumped. Spine upper edge tattered. Binding slightly visible between front whitepage and pre-title page. [VOL.III]: Cover stained. Cover corners bumped and peeling. Spine edges tattered/peeling. Spine hinges partly cracked/tattered and glued. [SUMMARY]: This extremely rare complete critical edition of poems by an eminent medieval Jewish poet, considered by literary scholars as "probably the best and most prolific author of 13th-century Christian Spain", is externally slightly worn, but otherwise is in good condition.
