Description
VOLUME 4 ONLY. Rare book by Don Alphonsus Ciacconius (Alfonso Ciacono) (1540-1599), a Spanish Dominican scholar who lived in Rome, an expert on ancient Graeco-Roman and Paleo-Christian epigraphy, the Medieval paleography and manuscripts, and the history of the papacy. Chacon didn`t finish writing this treatise, and it was completed by his grandson and published in 1601 in two volumes in folio. Because of the many errors in the first edition, it was revised, the amended edition appearing in 1630, and later also continued by other clergymen and offered to Pope Clement IX in four folio volumes published by Augustine Oldoini in 1677. The volume we offer for sale, the last of this augmented 1677 edition, includes many unpaginated indexes. 400x275mm. 796 pages [398 double-column pages] + 86 pages of unpaginated indexes. Rebound Hardcover with cloth spine. Cover stained and worn. Cover edges worn, bumped and peeling. Cover corners bumped and tattered. First several pages upper corner stained. Small worm-mark on 27 first pages upper corner (very small damage to text: few letters missing). First 27 pages inner edge near spine burn-marked (no damage to text). Small wormhole on pages 21-52. Pages 22-28 detached from binding. About 150 first pages inner edge near spine slightly stained (no damage to text). Some pages upper corner or bottom edge slightly stained or water-stained (no damage to text). Small worm-hole on 50 first pages. Small worm-hole extending through most pages upper corner near spine. Pages yellowing and wavy. [SUMMARY]: This extremely rare classic history of the papacy and cardinals suffered slight damage, but is still in good condition for its age.
