Description
RARE translation and extensive commentary on Genesis by Benno Jacob (1862–1945), Reform rabbi of Breslau, renowned Bible scholar and an active author and orator in the fight against German antisemitism in the years following World War I. In his classic commentaries on Genesis and Exodus, Jacob blends traditionalist view of the Torah with vast knowledge of Semitics, in an attempt to explain nearly every nuance of every word in the text. Jacob, though not a believer in Mosaic authorship, was an opponent of the Documentary Hypothesis, together with Umberto Cassuto. He based his rejection of the Documentary Hypothesis on the conviction that the Pentateuch presents so much literary unity and spiritual harmony, that a search for its "sources" could only be an exercise in futile hypothesis. 280x180mm. 1055 pages. Rebound quarter-leather Hardcover. Cover rubbed and peeled near spine. Cover edges worn. Cover corners bumped and peeling. Spine hinges partly cracked. Small writing on spine (Genesis, ed. Jacob). First 100 pages partly creased. Pages 29-32 bottom edge stained (no damage to text). Pages 343-346, 423-426, 471-474 and 679-682 have slightly worn edges. Small pencil underlinings throughout the pages. Pages slightly yellowing. [SUMMARY]: This extremely rare monumental commentary on and translation of Genesis has suffered some external damage (mostly to cover), but is still in good reading condition.
