Description
RARE 2 VOLUME SET of a revised fifth edition of a monograph on the geography and history of Spain in `El Cantar de Myo Cid` (El Poema de Mio Cid) by Ramón Menéndez Pidal (1869-1968) - a Spanish philologist and historian who specialized in Spanish folklore and the history and legend of `The Poem of the Cid`, the oldest preserved Spanish epic poem (epopeya) based on a true story of the Spanish hero El Cid during the Reconquista. In 1900, after marrying Maria Goyri, the first Spanish woman to receive a degree in Philosophy and to attain a non-medical doctorate at a Spanish university, Menéndez Pidal and his wife spent their honeymoon retracing the geographic sites and places mentioned in the `Poem of the Cid`. The linguistic analysis by Ramón Menéndez Pidal allows the reconstruction of a 12th century previous text, which he dated ca.1140. Contains 9 maps in color and many b&w plates. Primera Parte - Preliminares / Segunda Parte - El Cid Castellano / Tercera Parte - El Cid, Exluido de Castilla / Cuarta Parte - La Invasion Almorávide / Quinta Parte - El Cid Frente al Emir Al-Muslimin / Sexta Parte - Mio Cid el de Valencia / Séptima Parte - Conclusion / Octava Parte - Apéndices [+ Adiciones & Indice Alfabético]. [BOTH VOLUMES]: 230x155mm. 1015 pages: [XV+544] + [545-1015] pages. Brown rebound Hardcover with red cloth corners and spine with original spine pasted over. Original spine worn and slightly stained. Spine bottom edge bumped. Pages yellowing. [VOL.I]: Rear cover bottom edge slightly rubbed. Small pen mark on first whitepage. [VOL.II]: Front cover edges bumped. Two maps torn in the middle, last map joint partly torn. [SUMMARY]: This extremely rare study on Spain in the greatest medieval epic written in the Spanish language, is in good condition.
