RARE FIRST EDITION of Moses Mendelssohn`s Phaedon. Published in 1767, this famous defense of immortality by the renowned German-Jewish philosopher, later criticized by Immanuel Kant in `Critique of Pure Reason`, became a best-seller that paved the way for Mendelssohn`s outstanding career. Mendelssohn combines an interpretation and modernization of the Platonic dialogue "Phaidon" with a biography of Socrates. The book includes a b&w frontispiece of an engraving by the German painter Johann Ludwig Meil. 100x160mm. 309 pages. Quarter-leather marbled rebound Hardcover with gilt lines on ribbed spine. Page edges dyed red. Endpapers marbled. Includes book mark ribbon. Cover stained and somewhat worn and rubbed. Cover edges and corners worn. Cover corners bumped. Spine worn and stained. Spine gilt and lettering faded and illegible. Binding visible between front inner cover and whitepage. Previous owners` ex-libris sticker (Itiel Pann) on front inner cover upper corner and stamp (Prof. Dr. Martin Philippson, author of `Neueste Geschichte des jüdischen Volkes`, G. Fock, 1907) on title page bottom edge. The book`s title, data on its publication and very few biographical notes about the author inscribed in ink on whitepage by previous owner. Several pages very slightly age stained. Book mark ribbon loose. Pages yellowing. [SUMMARY]: Save for some external wear this precious first edition of Mendelssohn`s masterpiece is in good condition for its age.
